When UK skiers search, and what's changing

Five years of UK Google search data on ski holidays, ski kit and ski lessons. What it shows about timing, demand and competition going into the 2026-27 season, and what independent wintersports businesses can do with it.

Key findings

  • +38%growth in the January peak for “ski” searches since 2023
  • −23%fall in the January peak for “ski holidays” over the same period
  • +155%more “ski holidays” searching in May and June 2026 than 2025, against +26% for flights
  • +50%growth in the January peak for “ski lessons” since 2023

Interest in skiing is up. Searches for “ski holidays” are down.

Every January, UK search interest in skiing hits its peak. Over the last four seasons that peak has grown: January searches for ski were 38% higher in 2026 than in 2023.

Over the same four seasons, the January peak for ski holidays, the phrase most operators build their sites around, fell by 23%.

That doesn't mean fewer people are booking ski trips. It means they're searching for them in different words. In the last three months, the queries growing fastest alongside ski holidays were more specific: a season (ski holidays 2027), a price point (cheap ski package holidays), a format (all inclusive ski holiday, ski tours) or a brand.

For an independent operator, that's good news. A single head term was always going to be won by the biggest brands. Hundreds of specific searches are a much fairer fight, provided your site has pages that match them.

People search for the kind of trip, not just the destination. Searches for “all inclusive ski holiday” rose 450% in the three months to mid-October, and “cheap ski package holidays” by 350%.

The season calendar: when each search peaks

Every part of the market peaks in January, but they don't build at the same pace. The charts below show a typical season, averaged over four years (October 2021 to September 2025), with each term scaled to its own peak month. The darker bars are the months where a term runs at half its peak or more.

Three patterns stand out:

  • Ski holidays never really switch off. Even in a typical year, searching in the quietest months (May and June) runs at around 15% of the January peak, and by October it is back at nearly half.
  • Jackets peak early. Search interest for ski jackets is almost as high in November as in December, which points to early-season and Black Friday buying.
  • Boots have the longest tail. They build from November, peak in January and are still at 70% of peak in February, as people buy after a first trip or in time for half-term.

The off-season is becoming a buying window

The biggest change in the data is in the summer. Searches for ski holidays used to drop to around a tenth of their January peak between April and July. In 2026 they didn't.

Search data can shift for reasons that have nothing to do with skiing, so I checked it against a control term. If more people were simply searching for travel in general, flights would rise by a similar amount.

Average search interest in May and June, UK. Each row is on its own scale, so compare the change, not the values.
Search term20252026Change
"ski holidays"1128+155%
"ski"46+50%
"flights" (control)4759+26%

Flights did rise, by about a quarter, so some of the change is general. But ski holidays rose far more than that. The shift is real, even if the exact size of it should be treated with some caution.

The likeliest reading is that people are booking earlier and spreading their decisions across more of the year. A business that switches its marketing off between March and August is now missing a meaningful share of the people planning next winter.

The lifts go quiet in spring. The searching doesn't. In May and June 2026, searches for “ski holidays” ran 155% higher than a year earlier, as people planned next winter.

What's rising right now

The last three months of daily data (mid-July to mid-October 2026) show what UK skiers are searching for as the 2026-27 season approaches.

“ski holidays” daily search interest, 18 July to 15 October 2026

UK Google searches. 0 to 100, where 100 is the highest day in the period.

The highest day of the summer came on 6 August, two days after reports that the UK ski operator Yodl had gone into voluntary liquidation, cancelling its package holidays. A second spike on 19 to 21 September showed up in general skiing searches as well as holiday searches, so it looks like a wider news or media moment rather than a booking rush. I haven't found a single cause.

Searchers can't agree what to call this season

The most searched related query in the period was ski holidays 2027, ahead of ski holidays 2026. Some people name a season after the year it starts, others after the year of their trip. Pages that only use one label miss the other half of the searches.

Trust has become a search term

When an operator fails, customers search for what it means for them, and future customers search for reassurance. Make your financial protection easy to find: ATOL or other protection details on booking pages, in plain language and not only in the terms and conditions.

Snow worries are showing up in search

Among wider skiing searches over the same three months, el nino ski season impact grew by over 3,000%. That follows NOAA's August forecast of a very strong El Niño this winter, though forecasters say it's far too early to know what that means for snow in the Alps. The volumes are small, but the question is real, and several large operators have already published El Niño guides. An honest page on snow-sure options (altitude, glaciers, north-facing slopes) and your booking flexibility answers it better than silence.

Resort research starts early

The same wider searches show people researching where to go: resort names such as Tignes, Val Thorens, Avoriaz, Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes all rose, as did piste map searches for La Plagne and Val Thorens. People are looking up resorts months before they book, which is when a good resort guide earns its place.

Choosing where to go starts long before booking. Searches for Tignes, Val Thorens, Avoriaz, Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes all rose between July and October, alongside piste map searches.

Retail: boots are growing, jackets are flat

Search interest in ski boots has grown every season in the data. The January peak rose by about a third between 2023 and 2026. Interest in ski jackets has barely moved in five years.

That matters for independent shops. Jackets are a price and brand fight against large retailers with bigger budgets. Boots are different: fit matters, people need advice, and many want to try them on. That's where a specialist shop with a boot-fitting service can win, in search as well as in store.

Close-up of ski boots clipped into skis on a freshly groomed piste
Boots are the growth category. The January peak for ski boot searches was 32% higher in 2026 than in 2023, and “ski boot fitting near me” was a breakout search this autumn.
Two skiers in stylish ski suits and sunglasses carrying skis through falling snow
Apparel is going fashion-led. Searches for ski jackets have been flat for five years, while fashion labels such as Goldbergh, Montec and Dope are rising.

Shoppers are asking for advice, not just prices

The kit-related searches Google reports bear this out. Over the last three months, the fastest-rising searches were questions and services rather than products:

Selected rising searches related to “ski” (the equipment), UK. “Breakout” means growth of more than 5,000%, usually from a very small base.
ThemeExamples
Fittingski boot fitting near me (breakout), buying ski boots (breakout), ski boot flex explained (+160%); over five years, ski boot fitting (+120%)
Kids' sizingkids ski boot size, kids ski size chart, ski size for kids, kids ski poles (all breakout)
Careski tuning equipment (breakout), ski tuning (+60%)
Fashion labelsGoldbergh, Montec, Dope, Arc'teryx and Oakley goggles all rising; over five years, ski goggles (+350%)

Going the other way over five years: ski shop (−40%), ski sale (−50%) and ski hire (−50%). People are searching less for a type of shop and more for the specific help they need. A shop that offers boot fitting should say so plainly on its site and in its Google Business Profile, because that's the search it needs to appear for.

Instruction: lessons are the fastest-growing search

Of everything in this report, ski lessons grew the most. The January peak was 50% higher in 2026 than in 2023, and the term has stayed unusually high since the summer.

Until 2026, interest in lessons fell to near zero every summer. From June 2026 it stayed high and kept rising into the autumn.

The growth up to January fits a market with more people taking up the sport. The jump since June 2026 is less clear-cut: the numbers here are small, and a single event can move them. It's worth watching through this season before reading too much into it.

Related searches point both ways. Searches for UK indoor slopes, such as hemel hempstead ski (+60%), rose over the summer, and so did resort-specific searches like ski school tignes (+70%). People are looking for lessons at home and booking them for their trip.

What this means for independent wintersports businesses

None of this needs a big budget. It needs the right pages, live at the right time.

Tour operators and chalet companies

  • Build for specific searches, not the head term. Resort, format (catered chalet, all-inclusive, tours), group (family, solo, groups) and price pages will do more than another push on “ski holidays”.
  • Use both season labels. Mention 2026-27 and the trip year (Christmas 2026, February half-term 2027) in titles and copy.
  • Don't go quiet in spring and summer. Keep early-booking pages and campaigns live from March onwards. The 2026 data shows people are planning then.
  • Answer the comparison questions. best ski holidays was one of the top related searches. It's exactly the kind of question AI Overviews and ChatGPT now answer, so make sure your site gives clear, citable answers.
  • Put financial protection where people can see it.
  • Answer the snow question. A plain page on snow-sure options and what happens if conditions are poor will do more than staying quiet about El Niño.

Independent retailers

  • Be ready by October. Jacket searches are at three-quarters of peak by November. Category pages, product feeds and Shopping campaigns need to be in place before then, not during.
  • Lead with boots and fitting. It's the growing category, and the one where expertise beats price. Name the fitting service on your site and in your Google Business Profile.
  • Publish the answers. Kids' size charts, how boot flex works, how to look after your skis: these questions are rising, and a helpful page can rank in Google and be cited by AI assistants.
  • Keep spending into February. Boot searches hold at 70% of peak after Christmas, while many advertisers have already switched to clearance.

Ski schools and instructor training

  • Plan for January. It's the clear peak for lesson searches, so landing pages, booking and tracking need to work before Christmas.
  • Catch people before they travel. UK skiers search for lessons at home, weeks before their trip. Resort-based schools can reach them with UK-focused pages and campaigns.
  • Test the off-season. If the 2026 rise holds, there's demand for lessons and courses to be marketed outside the winter months too.

How this report was put together

All data comes from Google Trends, limited to the United Kingdom and web search. The five-year data runs from 17 October 2021 to 17 October 2026 at monthly resolution. The recent data runs from 17 July to 17 October 2026 at daily resolution.

Google Trends doesn't report search volumes. It scores interest from 0 to 100 within each comparison, where 100 is the highest point. Terms are only compared directly when they were in the same comparison: the retail terms, the lessons term and the control terms were each exported alongside “ski holidays”, so they share its scale. Because Google samples the data, the same term can score slightly differently between exports.

Google changed how Trends collects data from 1 January 2022, so year-on-year comparisons in this report start from January 2023. Small terms such as “ski helmets” were too low to report reliably and are only included in the data tables.

Trends also offers “topics”, which group related searches together: for example “Ski” as sports equipment and “Skiing” as a sport. Their long-term lines aren't reliable here. The Skiing topic shows no data at all before April 2023, and the Ski topic jumps in winter 2023-24 and then falls back, which looks like a change in how Google classifies searches rather than a change in what people did. So every trend line in this report uses exact search terms. The topics are used only for their related searches, from 17 July to 17 October 2026 unless a five-year figure is given.

I'll update this report each spring with a fresh year of data.
